GI at the heart of Europe -two days in Budapest

SDI/INSPIRE expert Robin Waters will publish his report on his personal impressions gathered during his recent short visit in the Hungarian capital and the merit of interviews with GI actors from the governmental and private sectors. He paid a visit in the HUNAGI/UNSDI HUCO Office at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development too. The reference of his publication will be given here as soon as it will be published.

At the occasion of the GSDI.World Bank Seminar on SDI completed on 1st of May, EUROGI experts Roger Longhorn and Vice-President Bruce McCormack paid a visit in the office of the World Bank desk officer for GDSI related actions Mr. David Gray (m). Mr. Gray delivered the World Bank expert's message at the GSDI-10 in St. Augustine earlier this year.

New President and Secretary General elected for the Hungarian Academy of Sciences

Academicians József Pálinkás and Tamás Németh have been elected as President and Secretary General of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences respectively.  Both are involved in the Hungarian events devoted to the International Year of the Planet Earth.

Academician Németh personally attended the inaguration meeting of UNSDI HUCO hosted by FÖMI in September 2006. His Institute of the Soil Sciences and Agrochemistry became one of the founding stakeholder of UNSDI HUCO.

FAO will host the above workshop which is held under the aegis of the European Standardization Committee for Geographic Information, CEN/TC 287. It is the second of a series of Mediterrenean Workshops, the first of which was held in Athens on 14 March. GSDI - CEOS WGISS liaisonship

A phone telecommunication has been arranged for May 7 in the subject initiated by Ms. Martha E. Maiden, Chair of the Working Group on Information Systems and Services of the Earth Observation Group. She is Program Executive of the Earth Science Data Systems at the Science Mission Directorate of the NASA Headquarters. GSDI Association and the CEOS WGISS keep liasionship since the WGISS-22 Meeting held in Budapest hosted by HUNAGI/EOGEO Hungary in Spring 2006. The basic idea is to provide exchange of  views and information on achievements in the two community strengthen the links between the Earth Observation' ground segment information systems and services with the emerging spatial data infrastructures. The improved interoperability based capabilities could contribute to the societal benefits area of the GEOSS, in frame of the implementation of its 10-year program. Atmosphere and Land Cover ” will be held in Graz, Austria from 9 to 12
September 2008.
The Symposium is part of a series of annual symposia held in Graz since
2003 concerned with the use of space applications for sustainable
development to support the Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on
Sustainable Development. It will be hosted and co-sponsored by the Federal
Ministry for European and International Affairs and the Federal Ministry
for Transport, Innovation and Technology of the Government of Austria, the
State of Styria, the City of Graz and by the European Space Agency (ESA).
Detailed information on the Symposium, including the application form, is

Within the limited funds available to the co-sponsors, a number of selected

eContentplusOpenDay 2008 Budapest, Hungary

eContentplus Open Day in Budapest. 

Organised by MATISZ and hosted by the Ministry of Economics and Transport the open day attracted 48 participants. Highlighting some best practices, the Hungarian Public Broadcast provided presentation on the Europeana program (www.europeana.eu)  of the European Digital Library. Best practices  related to the theme Geographic Information were presented by representatives of FÖMI and HUNAGI. Dr. J. Mlinarics, President of MATISZ and the eContentplus National Contact Point chaired the session devoted to the best practices. Marcel Watelet of DG InfSo, Ferenc Hargitai of MATISZ and Anikó Balogh of SZÁMALK, independent expert for DG InfSo gave useful hints for the participants how to submit application for the next (last) eContentplus Call scheduled for early June.

IYPE Hungarian Opening: successful start

Over 6000 people were attracted by the highly successful interactive exhibition devoted to the Hungarian Opening Event of the International Year of the Planet Earth. HUNAGI members and UNSDI HUCO stakeholders as the Hungarian Met Service, HAS Institute of Soil Sciences and Agrochemistry, Institute of Geodesy, Cartography and Remote Sensing (FÖMI), Hungarian Institute of

Hungarian Opening Event of the International Year of the Planet Earth

Some of the UNSDI HUCO stakeholders including the Hungarian Met Service, FÖMI the Institute of Geodesy, Cartography and Remote Sensing, MAFI the Hungarian Institute of Geology, Chair of the Cartography and Geoinformatics of the Eötvös Loránd University of Sciences prepared excellent exhibition booths for the wider public and visitors organised for and by schools. At the opening of the Exhibition welcome addresses were given by Natural History, by Prof. Eduardo de Mulder Director of the international programme of IYPE as well as by dr. Károly Brezsnyánszky, Chair of the National IYPE Commission.

Actions related to adoption of Climate Change knowledge for Territorial strategies

Dr. Frank van Holst of DLG, The Netherlands, manager of the former FARLAND project (Future approaches in land development) and manager of the recent F:acts! project paid a visit at HUNAGI's office hosted by MoARD.

F:acts! is for Adaptation Climate Change for Territorial Strategies

F:acts! consortium members include institutions and organisations from Spain, Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Lithuania and Hungary (MoARD).

In order to keep the momentum, a possible continuation of the Farland project independent from project finance was also discussed. The Hungarian champion of the project was Ms. Zsuzsanna Flachner of MTA TAKI, member of HUNAGI. The academic Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry is one of the stakeholder of the UNSDI HUCO

Speaking at the opening of the IPCC's 28th session in Budapest, Hungary (9-10 April), the UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Yvo de Boer, said that the link between policy-making and science needed to be stronger than ever before. "The task ahead is daunting," he said. "Parties have to negotiate one of the most complex international agreements in history in a very limited period of time, so they will need all the scientific support they can get."

By request, in his capacity as Secretary of the GSDI Association, HUNAGI SG submitted a two page notes to the President Prof. Dr. Bas Kok in the context GSDI Association and the global developments with special emphasis on UNGIWG/SDI and GEO/GEOSS. Also actions and events of CEOS WGISS (September, Boulder) and the Digital Earth Summit (November, Potsdam) were mentioned. The new biodiversity arm of the GEOSS, the inaugural meeting of the GEO Biodiversity Network (GEO BON) under the leadership of DIVERSITAS and NASA is scheduled for the next week. Before taking notes usually short consultations with relevant people have been arranged.

The main message of the welcome speech can be summarized as follows: The primary tasks of the GMES Bureau is developing a federated and structured demand for Earth Observation data and information and promoting fast-track GMES services. Recent challenges are to find new legislative and governance environment, new funding opportunities and to ensure appropriate business model, governance structure and longer-term financial sustainability as well as fostering downstream sector investments and pan-European level services. Pursuing the dialog, his main message was EUROGI is consultation partner for the GMES Bureau and further interactions and valuable inputs are expected and welcomed during the stakeholders consultation till the end of this year.
A short history: GMES Bureau was proposed jointly by Vice-President Verheugen, Research Commissioner Potočnik and Environment Commissioner Dimas with the primary objective of developing a federated and structured demand for Earth Observation (EO) data and information and ensuring the delivery of fast track EO services by 2008. The structure of the Bureau is unique, gathering staff from the Commission's Directorates-General for Enterprise and Industry, Research, Environment, Information Society, Agriculture, Rural Development, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, as well as the Joint Research Centre. UNSDI Stakeholder Hungarian Meteorological Service hosted the celebration of the 48th World Meteorological Day devoted to "Observing our Planet for a Better Future". President Dr. László Bozó submitted the message sent by WMO Secretary General Michel Jarraud. The keynote speech of the event was delivered by Zoltán Nagy, Head of the Department of the Earth Surface Measurements.

e-Government: Paradigm Change is needed

The event was hosted by the Central European University in Budapest downtown today.
The presentation of László Z.Karvalics was one of the highlights of the Conference providing a good complementary outlook to his softcopy book just released with the same title published by DEMOS. The book was disseminated on site but it is available and downloadable also from the website of the organisation at http://www.demos.hu/
The subject is important from the NSDI - eGovernment relationship and their potential synergy if integrated.

Consortium Meeting of the project eSDI-Net+

Methodology (elaborated by an expert group of EUROGI in Rome early February and discussed at the Consortium meeting in Lisbon last week) for describing sub-national SDIs will enable the identification and analysis of best practice in different countries and regions in Europe within the eSDI-Netplus.

The eSDI-Net+ project is about establishing "a European Network on Geographic Information Enrichment and Reuse".
