UN Economic and Social Council sets up committee on global geospatial information

"27 July 2011 – The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) today voted to establish a committee of experts on global geospatial information management to coordinate international dialogue on spatial data infrastructures and enhance cooperation in that field.

According to the latest report of the Secretary-General on global geospatial information management, the rapid technological advances in geospatial information and related technologies have made this kind of information readily available.

Geospatial information has application in many fields including humanitarian, peace and security, environmental and development challenges facing the world, such as climate change, natural disasters, pandemics, famines, population displacement and food and economic crises, according to the report.

Building the infrastructure for the gathering, validation, compilation and dissemination of geospatial information is therefore as important for countries as the building of roads and telecommunications networks.

However, there is currently no global multilateral or intergovernmental mechanism that can play the important leadership role of setting the agenda for the development of global geospatial information and promote its use to address key global challenges. 

The Secretary-General proposed that the UN take the lead role and serve as the coordinating entity of the global geospatial information community, hence the decision to create the committee.

The committee is mandated, among other tasks, with providing a platform for the development of effective strategies on how to build and strengthen national capacity on geospatial information, especially in developing countries.

It will also compile and disseminate best practices and experiences of national, regional and international bodies on geospatial information related to legal instruments, management models and technical standards, thus contributing to the establishment of spatial data infrastructures.

The committee will comprise experts from all Member States, as well as from and international organizations, who will serve as observers."

International SDI Workshop in Szeged, Hungary - Report for GSDI

HUNAGI's Chinese links - a short overview

HUNAGI’s links with P.R. China in the field of  EO/SDI and Digital Earth

FÖMI is member of HUNAGI, the nonprofit interdisciplinary Hungarian Association for Geo-information (http://www.hunagi.hu) .

Established in 1994, HUNAGI is an umbrella organization of learned societies, governmental agencies, private companies and academic institutions including universities. Today it has 88 member organisations and institutions, many of them from the Land Administration-related areas.

The Hungarian Society of Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing is its founder member, while the Hungarian flagship core geospatial data provider FÖMI,  the Institute of Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing joined HUNAGI in 1997.

HUNAGI has extensive international affiliations including EUROGI (Leuven, Belgium) since 1994, GSDI (Reston, USA) since 1996 and ISDE (Beijing) since 2003. In GSDI Association representatives of the Chinese State Bureau of Surveying & Mapping and HUNAGI were sitting together at the GSDI-5 Conference in Cartagena.

HUNAGI is a registered Spatial Data Interest Community of the DG JRC of the European Commission for INSPIRE and takes part in PSI/SDI related EU projects since many years.

HUNAGI arranged the Meeting of the Hungarian UNSDI Board with the Chinese SDI delegation hosted by FÖMI in 2007.

Secretary-general of HUNAGI and Dr. Jang Jie of the National Geomatics Centre shared the chair in the ISPRS Commission IV/1 Working Group of SDI after the Istanbul Congress and worked together during the ISPRS Congress in Beijing in 2008.

HUNAGI representative served as deputy head of the GSDI Association at the GEO-VII Plenary and Ministerial Summit held in Beijing in 2010.

HUNAGI participated the Conference on the Progress Report for the Center of Earth Observation and Digital Earth in Spring 2011 hosted by CAS CEODE (where Mr.  Li Pengde, Deputy Director of NBSM delivered a presentation) and took part the WG  Meeting on the Digital Earth Vision 2020 in Beijing.

HUNAGI has a seat in the Executive Committee of ISDE since 2008 and takes part also in the Editorial Board of the Int’l Journal of Digital Earth listed in the extended Scientific Citation Index.

Now HUNAGI will submit a bid to the secretariat of ISDE hosted by CEODE in Beijing offering a proposal to host the ISDE-8 Symposium in Budapest, early November 2013.  Digital Earth -8 topics cover among others EO/SDI/Internet of Things/Cloud computing and promising new technologies developed for the benefit of the communities and citizens.

Director-general of FÖMI was tentatively approached recently to serve as one of the three contact persons of the local organizer.

Future and Emerging Technologies Conference ('Science Beyond Fiction')'

A 3-day conference devoted to promising future European technologies has been successfully completed in Budapest this week.  Neelie Kroes, Vice President of the European Commission announced the six selected technologies which will receive significant support in the coming years:

• FuturICT - The FuturICT Knowledge Accelerator and Crisis-Relief System: Unleashing the Power of Information for a Sustainable Future
• Graphene - Graphene Science and technology for ICT and beyond
• Guardian Angels - Guardian Angels for a Smarter Planet
• HBP - The Human Brain Project
• ITFoM - IT Future of Medicine: a revolution in healthcare
• RoboCom - Robot Companions for Citizens

The conference and exhibition was official event under the Hungarian Presidency of the European Council. Tamás Fellegi, Minister of National Development and József Pálinkás, President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences made presentations too.

One of the flagship technology FuturICT was already introduced by HUNAGI on its blog devoted to the future.

Space-based information for Crowdsource Mapping - UN Conference on Disaster Management and Emergency Response

"Dear Colleagues,
The "United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response - UN-SPIDER" was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2006 with the following mission statement: "Ensure that all countries and international and regional organizations have access to and develop the capacity to use all types of space-based information to support the full disaster management cycle". Our ultimate aim is to help disaster management organisations access and use space-based information to support their work.
One of the core activities of the UN-SPIDER programme is the provision of technical advisory support to countries, including carrying out technical advisory missions. During these missions a team of experts meets with key disaster management authorities in the Government, UN agencies, regional and international organizations/initiatives and private entrepreneurs to discuss, make recommendations and develop guidelines to enhance the use of space-based information in disaster management. The purpose is to assess the current use of space-based technology and information for disaster management and emergency response, identify potential areas where space-based technology and information could play a greater role and contribute to improving the access to space-based technology and information.
The following Technical Advisory Missions are planned for the next 4 months:

- Technical Advisory Mission to Sudan from 22-26 May 2011  - Technical Advisory Mission to Cameroon from 7-10 June 2011 - Technical Advisory Mission to Nigeria from 13-17 June 2011  - Technical Advisory Mission to Bangladesh from 20-24 June 2011 - Technical Advisory Mission to Sri Lanka from 8-12 August 2011

If your organisation is interested in providing support by joining one or more of these missions please do send an e-mail to us (un-spider@unoosa.org) stating which country and the name of the expert being recommended to join the mission.

HUNAGI at the Board Meeting of the Hungarian Space Research Council

The Board Members have been informed by HUNAGI representative on five topics:
1. HUNAGI supports the initiative to establish MSc courses in Hungary in Geoinformatics. 
2. HUNAGI/GSDI at the CEOS WGISS-31 hosted by USGS EROS Data Center
3. HUNAGI will host the CEOS WGISS-32 in Budapest in September 2011 with embedded Hungarian Session
4. Planned Geocarto International special issue devoted to Hungarian achievements in RS/GIS/SDI 
5. HUNAGI and the ISDE. Involvement in the formulation of the Digital Earth Vision 2020 and the opportunity to host the ISDE-8 in Hungary in 2013.
The Meeting was partly participated by Dr. Éva Menyhárt Deputy State secretary of the Ministry of National Development who expressed her interest on the activities of HUNAGI in the field of Earth Observation and Spatial Data Infrastructure. 

New face for HUNAGI

The new logo for HUNAGI has been designed and produced by Ms. Réka Sajó, a young artist in graphics.
The logo can be downloaded from HUNAGI's Picasa album or in case if printing office quality is required it is also available by written request.
The first appearance of the new logo was actually at the 2nd HUNAGI Conference hosted by Hotel Gellért and even the international feedback was positive.
HUNAGI members and partners (including ITS Hungary, MLBKT, HUNSPACE, MATISZ) have been informed on the new logo yesterday by eNewsletter.
Our international partners such as  GISIG, EUROGI, GSDI, UNGIWG, ISDE, CEOS WGISS and other institutional links (including LAPSI, Plan4all, AGISEE, ) will be informed by the usual communication. The old logo might be used as banner.
